Situated just 15 minutes from the heart of Larnaca, fisherman and birdwatchers get to enjoy their hobby in a rural environment, soon to be a protected area. The Ahna Dam is a pleasant surprise to all who know Cyprus as just a holiday resort.
This location, tranquil and un-spoilt is home to many migratory birds and popular fish such as Crayfish, Carp, Mosquito fish and Roach. Most days, local angler’s fish and some may arrange day trips to other dams or even open sea fishing. Just a short drive away you will find the villages of Dasaki and Avgorou where the locals greet all with true Cypriot hospitality.
Fresh Water Fishing
Twenty-one dams in Cyprus provide excellent fresh-water fishing opportunities throughout the year. The dams are patrolled regularly by the local fisheries department as the fish are plenty, but must be returned to the water unharmed.
RULES AND REGULATIONS FOR ANGLERS IN CYPRUS
According to the revised Fisheries Law (Cap. 135 AND LAWS OF 1961 until 2004) the Fisheries Regulations of 1990 until 2004, Regulation 12, special licenses must be obtained from the Head Office of Fisheries Department, Nicosia or from the District Offices of Fisheries Department for those interested in angling in Dams.
Licenses are personal and are issued to persons over 12 years old.
The fee is ₤10.00cyp for each dam separately and ₤20.00cyp for all dams.
All licenses issued expire by the end of each year.
Also group licenses are issued to organised groups after application of the
representative of the interested group.
This license is valid for not more than 15 days and the fee is ₤5.00cyp per person.
The Fisheries Department sells at Cy£1 each a booklet in English with coloured pictures of all fish found in the reservoirs and useful information to the anglers.
Licenses are valid only when the dam is declared open by the Director of the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research.
Bird Watching
As Cyprus lies East of the Med and at the cross roads for migration, rear species are often sighted, especially around the dams, where the environment is ideal. With 369 species mostly undisturbed around the Island, bird watchers at Dasaki Dam will get to enjoy various species in special wooden huts set up by the village council.
Various websites www.lamsdell.worldonline.co.uk have been set up, that list all the species spotted in Cyprus and months of the year best for birding.
